God Is Close to the Hurting

When your heart is sad, God is near. He collects every tear and stays right beside you.

Jesus tenderly holding a sad girl close under a tree at sunset.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

Some days just hurt. Maybe you lost someone or something you love, or a friendship changed, or you can't even explain why you feel so sad. God does not rush you past those feelings.

The Bible promises that God is closest — not farthest — when we are brokenhearted. He doesn't stand back and wait for you to cheer up. He draws near and sits with you in the ache.

The Bible even says God keeps track of your tears, like they matter to Him. Because they do. You matter to Him. Sadness is not a sign that God has left; often it's exactly where you'll feel Him hold you.

It's okay to cry, and it's okay to tell God how much it hurts. He is a safe place for your sad heart, and He will be near for as long as you need.

Reflect

Let's think about it

  • What has made your heart feel sad or heavy?
  • How does it feel to know God stays close when you hurt?
  • Who is a safe person you could talk to about your sad feelings?
Pray

A little prayer

Dear God, my heart feels heavy sometimes. Thank You that You stay close to me when I'm sad and that my tears matter to You. Please comfort me and remind me I'm not alone. Amen.
