When Big Feelings Come

Feelings aren't sins, but they need a good King. Jesus helps us slow down and choose kindness.

Jesus comforting a boy with crossed arms who is crying under a tree.

“Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

James 1:19

Big feelings are not bad. God gave you feelings on purpose. But when anger or frustration rushes in like a storm, it helps to have a plan — and a King to give it to.

Even Jesus felt strong feelings, so you are in good company. The trouble isn't the feeling itself; it's what we do next. Angry words and slammed doors can hurt the people we love.

The Bible gives simple, wise steps: be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. That means taking a breath before you react. Slowing down gives God room to help you choose kindness instead of a blow-up.

So when a big feeling comes, you can pause, breathe, and pray: “Jesus, help me.” He is patient with you, and He will help you be patient too.

Reflect

Let's think about it

  • What usually makes your feelings feel “too big”?
  • What is one calm-down step you could try before you react?
  • How would being ‘slow to anger’ change things at home or school?
Pray

A little prayer

Dear Jesus, thank You that my feelings don't scare You. When big feelings come, help me slow down, listen first, and speak with kindness. Be the King of my heart today. Amen.

Live it out

Try this today

Pick a calm-down move for when feelings rise — take five slow breaths, count to ten, or step away for a minute — and practice it once today.
