Words That Build Up
Our words can help or hurt. Ask God to fill your mouth with kindness and truth.
“Say only what is helpful for building others up.”
Ephesians 4:29Words are powerful. The very same mouth can make someone's day — or break someone's heart. What we say really matters to God.
The Bible tells us to let our words build people up, like adding good bricks to a wall instead of knocking it down. Teasing, gossip, and mean nicknames tear people down. Kind, true, encouraging words help them stand tall.
Before you speak, you can ask a simple question: “Will this build up or tear down?” That little pause gives God room to guide your words toward kindness.
Your words carry more power than you know. Used well, they can be a gift that someone remembers for years. Ask God to fill your mouth with truth wrapped in love.
Let's think about it
- Can you remember words that built you up? How did they feel?
- When are you most tempted to use tearing-down words?
- Who could use an encouraging word from you today?
A little prayer
Dear God, help my words build people up, not tear them down. Give me kind and truthful things to say, and help me pause before I speak. Fill my mouth with Your love. Amen.
