David was the youngest in his family. He watched sheep on the hills and sang songs to God. He was small — but his trust in God was very big.
The shepherd boy
David took care of his father's sheep. When a lion or bear came, God helped David keep the sheep safe. David learned that God is strong and can be trusted.
A giant named Goliath
One day David's people were at war. A huge giant named Goliath stomped out every morning. He was taller than a doorway and shouted mean things. He wanted someone to fight him.
Everyone was afraid
Goliath was so big that all the soldiers shook with fear. No one was brave enough to face him — not one. For forty days the giant kept shouting.
David trusts God
Then David came to bring food to his brothers. He heard the giant and said, “Who is this giant to make fun of God's people?” David wasn't afraid, because he remembered how God had helped him before.
Five smooth stones
David picked up five smooth stones and his sling. He told Goliath, “You come with a sword, but I come in the name of the Lord.” Then David ran toward the giant — trusting God with all his heart.
The victory belongs to God
David swung his sling, and one small stone flew straight and true. The giant fell down! God gave David the victory that day, and everyone saw that God is bigger than any giant.
⚓ The big truth
You don't have to be big to be brave. When you trust God, He helps you face the “giants” — the scary, hard things — in your life. The victory belongs to God.
“The battle is the LORD's.”
— 1 Samuel 17:47
Try saying it out loud three times to help it stick!
Talk about it
- What are some “giants” (scary or hard things) you face?
- David remembered how God helped him before. When has God helped you?
- How can trusting God make you brave?
Let's pray
Dear God, sometimes things feel too big for me. Thank You that nothing is too big for You. Help me be brave and trust You with my giants today. Amen.
Try this at home
Find a small smooth stone. Write one word on it, like “trust” or “brave,” and keep it in your pocket to remember that God is with you.
